What high-quality text means to writers, beyond the benefits to the writing environment itself, is publication. Text-to-Speech synthesis and Speech-to-Text dictation. Every Mac program with a stock basic editor in it (Scrivener included, though we've added a lot to it) has:Īuto-correction and general text-expansion.įull dictionary (as in Oxford English Dictionary, not some 1913 public domain rip of Websters) look-up support. The hinting and kerning quality is professional level-while writing your text looks like someone spent time making it look nice in InDesign.įont rendering is one thing, the text editor itself is another. You have access to complex OpenType fonts and the typographic settings. It's also the technical details of the font rendering itself. It's not just res though, other systems have that of course. Having a low-fatigue font display like that does wonder for eye fatigue. The first time I saw a Retina screen showing 12pt Times New Roman, it felt like I was looking at a laser printer copy. Font rendering is also extremely crisp, owing not only to the resolution of the monitor, but its superior font rendering engine in general. When you buy a high-res Mac the whole thing looks like it was designed to look that way. You will find no tiny icons or weird text like you might on Windows.

There are things about a Mac that no other OS even comes close to, from what I've seen, that are of importance to writers: So with that in mind: I would say the Mac version of Scrivener is more enjoyable to use, not so much because of Scrivener itself but because of the Mac. I haven't used Windows for anything other than software QA and playing video games since the mid '90s. Disclaimer: I've been a Mac user since 2002 roughly, when I gradually switched from using Linux as my desktop.
